Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to class?
Comfortable work-out clothes, such as bike pants or yoga pants with a sports bra or tank top are best,
so the instructor can see your arms, torso, legs, and feet.  We generally dance barefoot, so you don't
even need shoes for the class.  A scarf to tie around your hips helps.

I have knee, back, or neck problems.  Can I still take the class?
Absolutely!  Belly dance is a very low impact activity and there are modifications to accommodate
physical limitations.  Of course, always check with your physician before beginning any exercise
regime.

I'm too big or I'm too old to take the class!
Nonsense.  Young, old, short, tall, big, small -- it doesn't matter.  Belly dance is a beautiful art form for
all women, regardless of age or  size, and it's great exercise too!

I've never a taken dance class before.  Is that OK?
No dance experience is necessary.  Each move is broken down and demonstrated, with lots of
practice.  If you need extra help, just ask the instructor.  She will be more than happy to help you.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes, private lessons are available.  Check with the instructor for more information.

Do I have to get a costume?  Does it have to be a certain kind?
We usually dress in costume on last night of class, but it is not a requirement.  If you choose to get a
costume, it can something as simple as a broomstick skirt or yoga pants, a top, and a hip scarf or a
coin belt or as elaborate as a beaded bra and belt.  You can go tribal, cabaret, or something in
between.  It's entirely up to you.

Isn't belly dancing like stripping?
No, not at all.  Belly dance is the oldest form of dance known.  It was originally a dance done by women
for women to celebrate life's important events, like weddings, birthdays, pregnancy, and the birth of a
baby.  Young girls learned the dance from their mothers, aunts, sisters, and other female relatives.  It is
a sensual, NOT sexual, dance.  We do not remove any clothing when we dance, and there is nothing
offensive or vulgar in the dance.

What does the class cover?
The class covers the basic moves of belly dance, such as snake arms, Figure 8's, hip circles, traveling
steps, hip drops and lifts, undulations, isolations, pops and locks, camel walks, hip shimmies, and
shoulder shimmies, depending on the choreography being taught.  Each six week session uses
different music and teaches a different choreography.

I have small children.  Can I bring them to class?
While a dance/exercise class is generally not a place for young children, sometimes it can't be helped.
 If you do have to
occasionally bring your child, please bring something for them to quietly entertain
themselves, such as books or a hand held game.  As long as the children aren't disruptive and stay off
the dance floor, I don't have a problem with it.  Other instructors may have a different policy, so it's best
to check with the instructor ahead of time.

If I take a class, can I join the troupe?
Membership in the troupe is by invitation, after open auditions.

Are you a professional belly dancer?
Is the troupe a professional troupe?
Yes and no, depending on your definition of professional.  Both the troupe and myself work very hard
to maintain extremely high (professional) standards in our dancing through training, workshops, etc.,
and we do earn money through classes and performances.  So we are professionals.  But we do not
earn a living solely from belly dancing.
